It's Almost Fall and I Completed a Thing

Evening!

So according to timestamps I completed Darkest Dungeon on August 31st, a little after that last blog post. I've spent the last few weeks being rather unproductive, but what else is new?

5) Complete Darkest Dungeon - 10/10

Still not including NG+ or 100%ing it or anything.

There's a bit of a trend here -- dogs, clerics, and jesters. I did get every class to max level, but obviously the Vestal with a trinket-based 45% bonus to healing helps out. The Occultist is just a bit too random for me; those 40+ HP crit heals aren't quite enough to balance out those 0-2 HP ones. For reference, the adjectives were used to keep track of teams early on, but as people started dying they got mingled up  a bit. And only two deaths in the final four missions!

I won't spoil the game too much but those deaths were absolute crap. Anyways, play this game! It's great! Occasionally frustrating.

4) Post Some Blogs - 3/8

Hmm. Well, posting 5 times in the next 4 days would be stupid so this is a write-off. Still, I'll try for at least one more. I've been meaning to make this post for a while but I kept thinking, "oh, I'll have to edit those screenshots" and then that took about... 5 minutes maybe. And I could've been quicker if I didn't keep forgetting what layer I was copying from.

3) Finish That Twine - 5/10

I haven't worked on this in a bit, but I did get a randomized shop mostly working out as well as an updating inventory system. You still can't actually leave, but theoretically I made the shop/starting place pretty copy-pastable in terms of function, so I just need to actually, ah... write the flavour bits.

2) Edit That Story - 2/10

I keep forgetting about that thing, except when I am nowhere near home. Or doing something else.

1) Get A Job - 7/10

This is a good one too. I've got a typing test to prove that I can type speedily/accurately this week, so if that works out I'll have some sort of data entry type job, which sounds like a pretty good beachhead to future office work. Still have to get officially interviewed and what not, but hey, one step at a time!

Conclusion

So I've done better than I expected, although worse than I hoped. I blame that on getting into a 20+ hour youtube series mostly, although that's a bit of a cop-out because fundamentally that is just avoiding blaming me. Fall's on Thursday, so I'll post something before and/or then. We'll see!

Saturday, 27 August 2016

Well that didn't take long, did it?

So, one postless month later. Wash of a month really.

Pokemon Go is more or less over for me. My main trouble was not having enough friends sufficiently into it. Also the Wireless Data thing, but mostly the first as it turns out.

So after 27 days I managed an assortment of pokemon, level 20, and 10 magnificent coins from that one time I held a gym. I caught 54 pokemon, and saw 56, so, we're a little over a third of the way there. Anyways, it was fun for a while but I can't be asked to keep at it. The experiment proves it's more or less possible to play without Wireless Data but ehhh, you can only grind so many pidgeys and ratattas before you stop caring about the hypothetical wondrous new pokemon you might find. Sorry, that's a rather presumptuous you there.

Regarding the 5-point plan:
1) Get a job - nope! Haven't tried very hard until 3 days ago though. Applications out, we'll see what comes of them. There's lots of adverts for grocery store jobs so I figure I do have a fallback plan. An alternative plan is to trash my Economics degree and try something else. Comp Sci seems exciting, although I'm hearing mixed reports on whether or not a degree is worth it instead of a focused programming course/camp thing. Luckily I've 'til October 15th to worry that over.
Score: 2/10

2) Edit that Story - well, I've sorted through old papers. I have way too many storylets and alternate versions of stories. And it's all paper so there's a bunch of paper about now. Short answer: not really.
Score: 2/10

3) Finish that Twine - I discovered a version that is about as far as I could have hoped for. It's got an introduction sequence and a few basic explanations and a stupid subplot with a box that still makes me smile. I edited it a bit. Finish? What the heck was I thinking when I wrote that? Well, I guess I can cut the scope a bit. Make it shorter, sillier, etc etc!
Score: 3/10

4) Post some blogs - well. Hmm. Could've not posted. At all.
Score: 2/8

5) Finish Darkest Dungeon - ooo, finally a good one. I've only got 2 Darkest Dungeon missions, although I need to level up a few more scrubs because of that "no character will do more more than 1 DD mission" rule. Bleh! When I wrote this I didn't include New Game+ obvs.
Score: 8/10

Overall Score: 3/10. Garbage! Well, I've still got a few weeks to sort this out.

Pokemon Go Without Data

So I've hopped on the Pokemon Go train, but my phone is incapable of accessing mobile data. I took it in and they don't know why it can't, suggesting it's just a glitch. Not wanting to be left out, I decided to try playing this using WiFi, which seemed like an interesting challenge.

A reasonable number of pokemon just sort of wander into the yard, although mostly ratattas, pidgeys, and weedles. Fortunately I like the latter two pokemon, although I haven't much use for quite this many. The most pressing issue is pokeballs, because while levelling up gives you a bunch, levels become further apart as you go. People complain about the cap on items but I've never come close to hitting it. I usually have between 10 and 30 pokeballs and a bunch of revives and potions that don't mean much to me.

The solution to getting Pokestops and new geographical poke-locations ends up being pretty inane. Coffee shops, shopping malls, and libraries offer WiFi and are usually on or near Pokestops (as well as air-conditioned). The downtown is full of all three things, although as a suburbanite that means needing an excuse to be down there. So it's mostly the local library, coffee shop, and occasionally the mall. Ironically the closer Pokestops in parks are useless to me, but it doesn't affect things too drastically.

After 3 days I'd managed to swing this exciting team:

It's also pretty difficult to hatch eggs without disconnecting WiFi

Certainly not the 1000+ CP lists I've seen around, but I'm not in this to be the (very) best (like no one ever was). I understand that I simply cannot compete on that level, and life's a lot simpler when you can accept that. I'm more interested in the catch-them-all part of the game, and even THAT'S not going to happen, so it's more like... I'm going to catch a bunch of them? Have some nice birds and bugs? After 9 days I've managed level 10 and I have this... gang?

Still mostly unexciting, but slightly... better? I guess?

So not impossible, but not very effective either. But hey, it's a bit of entertainment and if this game doesn't last very long I'm glad I'm (mostly) in on the scene. If you live somewhere rural, I don't really have an answer. Just be the best Bird Keeper you can I suppose.

A Twenty-One Month Update

Good afternoon readers!

So I haven't used this blog for much, largely because I haven't done anything terribly productive in 21 months. I use tumblr, but I feel like that's not the same blogging platform that this is, or really a blogging platform at all so much as a feed of curated... stuff.

At some point I scrapped a bunch of nonsense posts here because I wanted to try to make this more focused, and the result has been a blog that doesn't update from a person who doesn't create much. Well, I ought to figure out both of those I suppose.

I should clarify my first statement: I haven't done anything terribly productive in 4 months, roughly, whereas I haven't finished anything in 21 (or a little more I suppose). Perhaps one feeds the other. I've got almost a dozen story leads all in the same vague universe as my short story, and about as many story stubs. A few I've come to dislike, and a few still interest me. All told, there's one... well, it's basically a short story now that needs a second story to clarify it, or else a better ending. Either way it needs to be typed up because I've done roughs in pen for a while now.

Anywho, the bottom line is that whether there's no readers or 3 readers, doing little write ups helps me get a sense of order in my creative life. To that end, I think I'm going to use this blog a bit more to help track myself. How much more? Well, we'll see I guess. I aim to be less of a scrub by summer's end, which gives me a little under 2 months. No, no, that's not specific enough--57 days. Here's my todo list:

1) Get a job. I quit my overnight job to look for a better job but didn't really end up doing much with it, and my savings are getting a little scarce. I don't have too many expenses but I do like having electricity and water and food and other such things, so having an income is moderately important/useful.

2) Edit that story into something workable. The working title was "The Soul Trade", but that's more of a name for an anthology, which perhaps this story would feature into. The previous idea was to have a story told with a relay of narrators, but perhaps I can loosen that up to just a shared city. Well, one step at a time. Speaking of:

3) Finish that Twine Story. I toyed with Twine and found it pretty entertaining and intuitive. I was going to work out a little game around exploring a city in my universe. Scale is important here, which is to say that I need to focus on LITTLE. A small prototype, and maybe something bigger after that. The premise would be solving a mystery at a fair, or maybe just becoming a magician at a fair. Or maybe both???? (start small!)

4) Post some Blogs on this here blog. Once a week lets call it. 57 days gives us... just over 8 posts. This doesn't count, that's stupid. This is a weak structure to frame some creative progress, but I need structure of course.

5) Finish Darkest Dungeon at least once. This isn't quite a creative goal, but I'm digging it and it does spark creative interest in me. It certainly skews it to a dark melodramatic place, but a bit of that cannot hurt.

Well, that looks good. I want to do all 5, but all that really matters is number 1, number 4, and either 2 or 3 (both would be nice but I will probably mess that up), and I will end up doing 5 no matter what. I only put it on the list because 5 is a nice number. I worry about "ripping off" numerology from other fictions, but then I tell myself that's trash because, I mean, it's fucking numbers. Still. Ideas are hard to dispel.
